I have had the privilege of adopting two horses from Horse Feathers Equine Center. Not only do I know what an amazing program it is, but I am also honored to personally know the owner, Cheri White Owl. She is an incredible person doing important work. The horses who come to her are so lucky. She has the talent and dedication to bring them back to health and help them find loving homes or allow them to live their best lives at Horse Feathers.

Cheri called me in 2023 and said, “I think I have a horse just for you. Please come out and see her.” I excitedly drove out that Friday. Her trainer, Sarah, and I rode her, and I knew she was meant to come home with me. She was a beautiful 16-year-old liver chestnut mare named Jinxy.

I ride trails on Jinxy Girl (her affectionate nickname) every week, and she is my heart horse. Every evening she comes to me when I call her name. When she sees me, she walks over with her precious nicker. She absolutely loves peppermints, and when she hears the wrapper, her nickers get louder. She has the spirit of a princess and is never, ever dirty. The relationship we share is something I never imagined possible.

My granddaughter Louise is my horse-riding sidekick, and she loves Jinxy Girl just as much as I do. She rides her and takes wonderful care of her. In December 2025, I called Cheri because I was interested in another horse available for adoption named Ian. I knew he would be the perfect horse for 8-year-old Louise.

We drove to Horse Feathers that day and surprised Louise with her very own horse, Ian Lasso. As a grandmother, it was one of the greatest gifts of my heart to present Louise with her own horse. I have never seen a little girl so happy and proud.

Ian is a 5-year-old sorrel gelding with the best disposition. He is a sweet, gentle boy who loves playing in the pasture with the other horses and, of course, enjoys treats. He is steady and kind, and he will spend the rest of his life growing up with Louise as his human. Louise decided to give Ian a barn name, so now we call him Lasso.

Every day when I go out to feed, they both come running, eager to eat and be groomed.

It is such a privilege to have these beautiful horses in our lives, and I am eternally grateful to Cheri and Horse Feathers for giving us the opportunity to give them the very best life and care.

Thank you, Horse Feathers.
